How it works
How tips are calculated.
- 01
Calculate tip amount
Tip = Bill × (Tip% ÷ 100). For a $50 bill at 20%: Tip = $50 × 0.20 = $10.
- 02
Calculate total
Total = Bill + Tip. For $50 + $10 tip: Total = $60.
- 03
Split per person
Per person = Total ÷ Number of people. $60 ÷ 3 people = $20 each.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
How much should I tip?
In the US, standard tipping is 15-20% at restaurants. 15% is considered acceptable, 18% is good, and 20%+ is excellent. For exceptional service, 25% is common. Tip on the pre-tax total, though tipping on the total is also widely accepted.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal since sales tax is not a restaurant service. In practice, most people tip on the total bill — the difference on a $50 meal with 8% tax is only about $0.90, so either approach is fine.
How do I split a bill unevenly?
This calculator splits the total (bill + tip) equally. For uneven splits, divide manually: each person pays their items plus their proportional share of the tip. For example, if you ordered 60% of the food, you pay 60% of the total tip.
What is the standard tip for different services?
Restaurant servers: 15-20%. Bartenders: $1-2/drink or 15-20%. Food delivery: 10-15% ($3-5 minimum). Hair salon: 15-20%. Hotel housekeeping: $2-5/night. Taxi/rideshare: 10-15%. Coffee shop/counter service: optional, $0.50-$2.
Should I tip differently outside the US?
Tipping norms vary widely. In Japan and parts of Asia, tipping is considered rude. In Europe, rounding up or leaving 5-10% is common. In Australia and NZ, tipping is optional. Always research local customs before traveling.
