Simple % vs Karvonen Method

The simple percentage method multiplies your max heart rate directly by a target percentage. It's quick, but it treats everyone the same regardless of fitness level.

The Karvonen method uses heart rate reserve — the gap between your max HR and resting HR — so it adapts to your individual cardiovascular fitness. A fitter person with a lower resting heart rate gets a different (usually higher) target HR at the same "intensity" than someone less conditioned.

Both are estimates. The 220 − age formula alone can be off by 10-20 bpm for a given individual, so use these zones as a guide, not an exact prescription.
