How it works
Your final course grade is a weighted average of two pieces: the grade you've already earned before the final, and the score you get on the final exam itself. If the final counts for, say, 20% of your grade, then the other 80% is already locked in from your current grade.
In formula form: overall = current × (1 − weight) + final score × weight. To find the score you need, we rearrange this to solve for the final score: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.
Worked example: say your current grade is 85%, you want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 20% (0.20). Your current grade already locks in 85% × 0.80 = 68 percentage points. You need the remaining 90 − 68 = 22 points to come from the final's 20% share, so you need 22 ÷ 0.20 = 110% on the final — which is impossible, meaning a 90% overall isn't reachable in this scenario.
If instead your final were worth 50%, the math changes: 85% × 0.50 = 42.5 points already locked in, leaving 90 − 42.5 = 47.5 points needed from the final's 50% share, or 47.5 ÷ 0.50 = 95% — a realistic target.
This is why exam weight matters so much: the smaller the final's share of your grade, the less it can move your overall grade in either direction.
Tips for using this calculator
Find your exam weight first: Check your syllabus for the exact percentage the final counts toward your overall grade.
Use your most recent grade: Your "current grade" should reflect everything graded so far, not just one assignment.
Check the what-if table: It shows how sensitive your course grade is to different final exam outcomes, useful for setting a realistic study target.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions.
What grade do I need on my final exam?
It depends on your current grade, your target grade, and how much the final is worth. The formula is: needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − exam weight)) ÷ exam weight, where exam weight is written as a decimal (20% = 0.20). For example, if you have an 85% going into the final, want a 90% overall, and the final is worth 20% of your grade, you would need a 110% — meaning a 90% overall is not achievable no matter how well you do on the final.
How is the final exam grade needed calculated?
Your course grade is a weighted average of your pre-final grade and your final exam score: overall = current grade × (1 − weight) + final score × weight. To find the score you need, rearrange this equation to solve for the final score. This calculator does that rearrangement for you automatically, so you just enter your current grade, your goal, and the final's weight.
What if the score I need is over 100%?
If the calculated needed score is above 100%, your target grade is mathematically out of reach for this course, since no exam allows scores above 100%. The calculator shows the highest course grade you could still achieve with a perfect final, so you know exactly how close you can get.
What if I've already secured my target grade?
If the needed score comes out at zero or below, it means your current grade is already high enough that even a 0% on the final would not drop you below your target — you have effectively already secured that grade or better. Double-check your exam weight and target, since a very low required score usually means your goal was already conservative relative to your current standing.
How do I find my final exam's weight in my overall grade?
Check your course syllabus — most instructors list a grading breakdown such as 'Homework 20%, Midterms 30%, Final Exam 50%.' The final exam weight is simply the percentage assigned to the final in that breakdown. If your syllabus does not state it directly, ask your instructor, since this number is essential for calculating what you need to score.
Does a low final exam weight mean I don't need to study as much?
A lower weight means the final has less influence on your overall grade, which can make a struggling course grade easier to save or a strong grade easier to protect. However, it also means a great score on the final can only move your grade so much, so if your current grade is far from your goal, a low-weight final may not be enough to close the gap even with a perfect score.
Can I use this calculator for a final that isn't a percentage of the grade?
Yes, as long as you can express the final's contribution as a percentage of your overall grade. If your final is worth a fixed number of points instead, convert it to a percentage first by dividing the final's point value by the total points possible in the course, then multiply by 100.
